The Screenplay Hasn't Been Written Yet: AI, Hollywood, and the Fight Over Who Gets to Tell the Story
Los Angeles County has lost more than a quarter of its film and TV jobs since 2022. Production work is down over 35% in the last four years. Meanwhile, the global market for AI in media and entertainment is barreling toward a $100 billion valuation by 2030, and roughly a quarter of the production budget on major blockbusters is now going to digital and AI-generated assets. Those two facts are sitting in the same room right now, and neither one is leaving.
This is the actual state of movie and TV production in 2026: not a clean story of robots replacing artists, and not a clean story of AI as harmless studio tooling either. It's messier than that. It's a labor fight, a legal fight, and a genuine creative reckoning happening all at once, in public, with the guilds, the studios, the platforms, and a growing wave of solo creators all pulling in different directions.
The Job Loss Is Real. So Is the Opportunity
Start with the uncomfortable number. Industry estimates suggest AI could touch over 200,000 entertainment jobs in the next few years, and the roles bearing the brunt right now are the ones built around repetitive, asset-heavy work — concept art variations, background VFX passes, rough pre-vis. That's not speculative. It's already happened to a generation of below-the-line crew in Los Angeles, and it's a big part of why SAG-AFTRA and the WGA fought so hard over AI protections in their last contract negotiations.
But the same disruption cuts a second way. A solo filmmaker with a laptop and a clear vision can now produce short films that look like mid-budget studio work. Foundational model access that used to require a studio deal now runs through a text box. The gatekeeping that decided which stories got greenlit for the last hundred years is loosening — not gone, but loosening — and that's opening the door for storytellers who never had a way in before.
Both of these things are true simultaneously. That's the tension defining production right now, and it's not resolving cleanly in either direction.
"Fix It in Post" Is Becoming "Fix It in Pre"
The more interesting shift, structurally, is happening earlier in the pipeline. The old Hollywood instinct — shoot now, solve problems in the edit — is giving way to front-loaded planning, where AI tools handle previsualization, storyboarding, and location scouting before a single camera rolls. That changes where the money goes. It changes which departments matter most. And it's already reshaping who gets hired and when.
Some industry voices go further, arguing that current-generation virtual production technology — LED volumes, in-camera VFX — may not survive the shift at all, replaced by AI workflows that can generate and composite backgrounds without a physical stage. Whether or not that prediction holds, it's a sign of how far the "AI is just a tool for VFX touch-ups" narrative has already been left behind.
What We're Actually Watching For
At HomelandAI, we spend most of our time on the visual and generative side of this — Monolith DOGS, Render Arena Live, the apparel line that turns generative art into something you can wear. But we read everything that crosses our desk about where storytelling itself is headed, and one document landed differently than the usual AI-filmmaking pitch decks.
It's a project synopsis for something called Multi-POV Spatial Cinema — not a tool that speeds up an existing production pipeline, but a proposal for a genuinely different format. The pitch: instead of one director's single camera position, a story is built as a spatial-temporal map, with multiple characters experiencing the same event from six independently complete, contradictory points of view. The audience doesn't watch the story — they're dropped into one character's body, in XR, and have to piece together what actually happened by comparing perspectives afterward. The synopsis calls the viewer the "seventh perspective" — someone who ends up holding more information than anyone inside the story itself.
We want to be direct about this: it's a synopsis, not a working product. We haven't seen it built, and a format this ambitious — new continuity rules across six timelines, new crediting structures for something they call a "Master Architect," full-scale XR delivery with haptic and thermal feedback at physical venues — has a long way to go before anyone can call it proven. Plenty of ambitious formats have died on the way from pitch deck to opening night.
But it's worth mentioning here because it's aimed at something most AI-in-film conversation completely ignores. Nearly all the current discourse is about efficiency — cheaper VFX, faster pre-vis, AI actors saving money on extras. This synopsis is arguing something different: that spatial computing doesn't just make movies bigger, it can make them more honest, because a first-person viewer genuinely cannot see around a corner they didn't turn. The limitation isn't a bug. It's the entire point. That's a rarer conversation, and regardless of whether this specific format ever ships, it's a legitimate signal of where ambitious people are pointing their attention next.
The Real Question Isn't Human vs. AI
The framing that keeps showing up in trade coverage — AI versus human filmmakers — is probably the wrong lens. The more useful question is who gets to hold the camera at all, and what new roles get invented once the old ones stop being the only path in. AI cinematographers, prompt directors, continuity supervisors for six-timeline productions that don't exist yet — none of these had job titles two years ago.
New mediums don't arrive with an instruction manual. Someone has to write it. That's as true for a TikTok creator in Manila cutting a viral sci-fi short as it is for a hotel-set neo-noir experienced from six irreconcilable points of view. The format isn't finished. The screenplay for the format itself hasn't been written yet. That's usually where the interesting part starts.
